Tobermory Tam
A Scottish tam, like the French beret, is a style of hat with a flat top and extra width at the sides, so it can be styled in different ways. It is particularly easy to wear, and suits most face shapes. If you think you don’t look good in hats, try a tam!
This version uses traditional Scottish tam shaping and stitch patterns. It is named for the small village of Tobermory, Ontario, where the designer was spending time when working on it.
Originally written for BC Garn Bio Shetland, it can be made with any woolen-spun, 2-ply jumper-weight yarn. It uses two or four colours of yarn.

Gauge: 17 sts/10cm in stockinette stitch with larger needles
Size: Adult Medium (may be made smaller or larger by adjusting gauge)
Measurements: 46" (49") bust, 62" (65") wingspan, 21½" (24") length

- 25g (140m) of BC Garn Bio Shetland (280m/50g) in one main pattern colour (MC)
- 25g (140m) of BC Garn Bio Shetland (280m/50g) in one or three complementary background colours (BC, or BC1, BC2, BC3)
- 2.75mm (US 2) 16” circular or double-pointed needles, or size required to get gauge
- 2.25mm (US 1) 16” circular or double-pointed needles, or size required to get gauge
- Stitch markers
- Darning needle
